The second one reminds me of something one of the "band-aids" would wear on Almost Famous. So just in case you are tempted by the leather shorts that Elle says are going to be a staple for this coming season it might be good to look towards more flattering leather options!

Acid wash jeans spotted in the fall '08 collection @ Topshop

So I originally balked at the sight of the acid wash jeans that came out last summer. They just look so... so 80's. And I still haven't gone out and purchased a pair for myself (nor am I likely to) but I have been able to reconcile myself to them and concede that they can look nice on women over the age of 16. Like almost anything else they can be made elegant and age appro with a good jacket and grown up accessories. In fact I think they will look a lot better this fall then they did this summer.

Happy Monday!

I'm still sort of in a food coma from the most gyro sandwich I've ever had. Sure we had to drive to Northridge to get it, but it was honestly up there for the most delicious thing I've ever tasted in a pita, and also the size of two regular gyros. From this carb and lamb induced stupor I rise to give you two things that amused me this weekend...

It went from elegant construction...

In my book this is perfection. However

I just... yeah... If you can find any redeeming qualities about this dress (other than the model, I love Magdalena!) I'd love to hear about it. I really can't wrap my little brain around this one! In fact thinking about it is making me tired. I think I'll go to bed. adieu!!

At my new favorite store, the Gold Bug in Pasadena, pop-surrealism meets a neoclassical Wunderkammer and the result is dark, dreamy and thoroughly enchanting. If I had more dollars I would have made several purchases. As it is I will make several visits to admire all the little odds and ends that are so carefully curated.

Also!! I really want to go see the latest version of Oleanna by David Mamet that is playing right now at the Mark Taper Forum. I loved this play when I read it in college and I think Bill Pulman is perfect for the role of the professor. EEEk I hope I get to go!!

Well, I've given in. In a moment where I desperately needed distraction from reality (even if that reality is fashion design) I checked out Gossip Girl from the library. I'm now on disc 2 a week later and I'm addicted. Gossip Girl has not yet spawned the crack-fiend like addiction that Sex&theCity did when I finally got around to watching that, but it's running a close second.

With that in mind I was delighted to see Taylor Momsen, the sugary sweet little sister on Gossip Girl, featured on Garance Dore's blog today looking like a little bitty Courtney Love.

Clearly she is trying to steer away from her Upper East Side prep school look that she sports on screen. But if you are trying to steer towards it but just don't have the cash, consider one of these "It Bag" totes from Nosideup on PapernStitch.

Let's keep it at least slightly real ;)

The Model as Muse Gala

The Costume Institute's annual Gala always turns out to show quite a wide array of fashion looks... some perfectly lovely... some so bad you're a little embarrassed for the people wearing them. Here are my top ten favorite and least favorite looks.

The Best

I'm in love with the classical drape of this John Galliano.

Dark blue Chanel FTW.

Clair Danes demonstrates her understanding of the first two rules of dressing for a night out... find a dress that flatters your shape, and find an adorable date.

Normally I'm more attracted to longer dresses at these types of events, but both Jessica Stam and Sasha Pivovarova have chosen stunning looks. I'd say they are both muse-worthy modles!

I realize that Renée Zellweger in Carolina Herrera is a rather safe choice for a "best of" list, but look at that color! I just love it, I can't help it.

These two get my vote on coolness factor alone... but I'd like to see Lou Doillon move about in this... it might not work out so well.

I've long been a fan of what Mike and Chris does with leather. It's always hip and eye catching with an attention to detail. And in my mind I think I should like this denim jacket... but I can't decide! The military style collar and epaulets are always a favorite, and the woven denim is a great idea, but something doesn't gel for me... a darker wash maybe? Move the weave from the yoke to the side panels? Anyway, I'll let you be the judge!

Dirty Librarian Chains for Urban Outfitters

I'm totally appreciating the accessories at Urban Outfitters right now.

This necklace by Love Lila for Round Design is almost identical to one on the Round Design site. I tried it on yesterday and it's pretty dang cute! And such a steal at the price.
And while I'm saving up for this necklace from Dirty Librarian Chains I can get this one above for a lot less! DLC had a couple really great styles including some earrings that were in the store and online.

I'm kind of having a moment right now. I desire neutral colored suede flats... and literally just as the thought is growing in my mind I stumble upon The Perfect Shoe at Totokaelo.com . It's sort of sad that Rock and Republic obviously made these with me in mind, and yet failed to consider my finances when setting the price point! Someone PLEASE rip off this design pronto so I can afford them!!

It's something that would be easy to emulate, and it has that combination of modern and vintage which is interesting to me.

Annenberg Space for Photography

We've wanted to check out the Annenberg Foundations new gallery space for photography for a few weeks now, and as luck would have it, today we were in the neighborhood! We really didn't have a lot of expectations regarding it, and we were very pleasantly surprised by the high tech space and by the quality of the photographs that were displayed. We were a little intimidated by the vast parking structure and the building in which the space is housed, but if you were thinking of going, don't let it deter you! Once you make it up to the main level it's sort of like being in the office building version of the Getty. There are eleven Los Angeles photographers on display there now, and the subject matter and style varies, but the quality is consistent. One thing that surprised both Kelly and I is that the architectural photos were some of our favorites. Maybe the high-def screens and soothing soundtrack made them stand out a little more for us. It's an interesting way to view photographs, and I think they make it work.

The Great Shoe Dilema

This is the post in which I unburden my heart to you, dear readers. This is a tale, both tragic and triumphant, which you will either relate to, or will make you shun this blog for all time.
The subject? Shoes. And the ultimate skeleton in my closet? I don't wear heels. Ever.

The other night a very nice girl loaned me a pair of Jimmy Choos for an event. The shoes were adorable, peep-toed and flattering, and hell they were the first Jimmy Choo's I'd ever worn! I slipped them on and thought... now you've arrived girl, this is fashion. And for about ten minutes I was pleased with them, although in the back of my mind I was thinking... ohmygod I'm as tall as the models in these! I look like I'm playing dress-up! Who let me out of the house in these?! I'm not qualified!!!

Meanwhile, we arrive at the fashion show and my friend is skating about with ease in her heels while I am concentrating on not looking like some weird vintage inspired alien being who has just discovered the use of her legs. The show wraps and we wander for a bit, and I'm slowing down as the ache in my feet becomes more intense. Finally we make it to the curb to wait for our car, but a snag!! We have no cash for the valet!! We have to find an ATM, at midnight, in downtown Los Angeles. I ended up prancing about the city streets barefoot, Choo's in hand, defying anyone to say anything to me.

All of this has led me to declare once for all that I do not wear traditional high heels. I don't see it as giving up so much as making a statement of what has always been true for me. I'm not a traditional fashion girl, and since I'm perfectly comfortable with my height I see no need to parade myself about in heels more than 2 inches high. I thought I was doing really well when I purchased these blue Miz Mooz granny heels!
These are no Jimmy Choo's, but these may be about as high as I go.

So I raise my glass to you Mary-Kate and VB, you girls rock those stilettos! Meanwhile I'm happy to rule them out for myself, and be comfortable and mobile in shoes that appeal to me. I know that fashion isn't really about honesty, but maybe it can be.

SPRING EEEEEE!!! heheh maybe I shouldn't be as stoked since in all fairness I didn't really experience winter this year what with living in Los Angeles and all. But spring still gets to me. I guess I'm still in the habit of being excited about it from living in Seattle.

I'm enjoying spring in my imagination by watching Barefoot in the Park, eating fresh strawberries smothered in cream, and reading french novels.

Spring Means Asparagus!

It's finally time for the lovely fresh young Asparagus shoots to start showing up at the store! We had yummy Asparagus Risotto the other night that Kelly cooked up and I thought I'd share the recipe since it's so easy and yet so delicious.
This recipe is from the book Greene on Greens by Bert Greene.

- 1/2 lb. young asparagus
- 3 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 large shallots (we used a red onion since shallots are a bit strong to me)
- salt and fresh pepper
- 1/4 cup dry white wine
- 1 cup white rice (or Italian rice)
- 2 1/2 - 3 cups chicken stock (I'd go low sodium)
- 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese (or as much as you want really)
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley

1. Cut and set aside the tips of the asparagus. Cut the stems into 1/2 bits.
2. Saute the onions or shallots in the butter in a large skillet then add the asparagus stems and salt and pepper to taste and cook for 1 minute. Stir in wine and cook, stirring constantly until almost all the liquid has evaporated.
3. Stir in rice and 1 cup of the chicken stock. Cook uncovered over medium to low heat without stirring for 10 minutes or until the stock is absorbed. (reduce heat if the liquid is absorbing faster than this)
4. Pour in 1 more cup of stock. Cook without stirring for 10 more minutes.
5. Stir the asparagus tips into the rice. Add 1/2 cup of stock and cook until liquid is absorbed, and the rice is tender , about 8 more minutes. Stir in cheese, sprinkle with parsley and serve!!

This is pretty delicious, and we served it with a Hendrick's and tonic which is also delicious.

Ok, so I've said it before and I'll say it again. The French sailor sweater is perfection, and totally adorable in all it's variations. Right now Creatures of Comfort here in Los Angeles has the ones I want.The first one is Rachel Comey, and the neckline and drap of the lightweigt knit is so flattering. And the fun reversal of the pattern on this sweater by A.P.C. is eyecatching.

*sigh... ok enough daydreaming... back to sketching.

Classical Crush

So I've always had a huge crush on the Romantic composer Franz Liszt. And by always I mean since I was like 5 and had already been playing the piano for two years and saw this picture of him in a book. I've always had a thing for noses.

So last night Kelly and I watched the 1991 movie Impromptu staring Hugh Grant as Chopin and Julian Sands as Liszt, and my only real thought is how have I not seen this before?!?! Gorgeous Victorian costume, gorgeous music and gorgeous men (and women, god bless you Bernadette Peters, I have a crush on you too.)

So if anyone knows some rich patrons for us to stay with I say we go camp out at a country villa and picnic and play music and write and make fun of everyone we don't like.

Intviting Invitations

So I'll confess right now... I'm really into this whole wedding thing. Hopefully my blog wont be over-run with wedding stuff, but I'm not making any promises. Right now my mind is on invitations, and all of these have provided wonderful inspiration.

This is from HelloLucky and is called The Sophisticate. Very. I love the border and muted colors!

I love the wording of this RSVP card, and the little birds are adorable. Also from HelloLucky.

The floral pattern on this one is perfect. Interestingly this is the "Seattle" style at KenzieKate.

Kelly found this one, and I agree, the twine binding is inspired. Also at KenzieKate.

But so far my favorites are these from Milkfed Press...

The deckled-edge on this last one is a must. And since I have the feeling that we are actually going to be doing the invitations on my Dad's press we can tear a nice edge on all the invites ourselves.

They just opened a new shop in Pasadena over the holidays, and when Kelly and I were wandering on Saturday I couldn't help but be lured in by the shinny display case filled with dark coco perfection. Pardon the groan worthy title of this blog. It's Monday (i.e. all day at school day) and my brain is still trying to figure out how to properly "true the front of a bodice on the dress form". But my hazy cognitive processes came into focus for a second when I saw these adorable thigh-highs from Hansel from Basel's Spring line! They remind me of those amazing thigh-highs at Prada in 2006. So so perfect. These are just begging to be worn.

As a newbie to the Los Angeles scene I am always looking around for new favorite stores, and today I found one! The Circle indie designer outlet studio in Silver Lake is happily exactly what they claim to be, a boutique style shopping environment that carries new indie labels like Dear Creatures, Porridge and Prairie Underground at a deep discount. I got a couple nice tops by Wren, and I'm planning on a return trip very soon. As a dedicated bargan hunter who almost never buys clothing at the full price this was an excellent find!

After reading the actual Pride and Prejudice quite a few times I'm sort of having a nerd moment about reading the zombie version which Chronicle Books is putting out in April.

The Green Fairy

Between my obsession with the early 20th Century Avant-garde and Kelly's obsession with pre-prohibition cocktails, we were bound to get into absinthe at some point. And that moment is now.

I have always admitted to being a sucker for good advertising, and the wonderful Art Nouveau images from early absinthe advertisements have always charmed me. I know it's a bit hackneyed these days, but I'm honestly just a huge fan of this whole aesthetic, and I'll admit that when it comes to the lure of absinthe I've bought the hype hook, line and sinker.
At the moment we are drinking Kubler absinthe which tastes absolutely delicious, but to my initial disappointment is actually a blanc. The liquid is clear, and when mixed with ice water turns a dreamy quartzy pinkish white. A blow to my romantic image at first but after a few sips I was enjoying both the color and the flavor.

Another lure of absinthe is of course the ceremony and all the delightful accessories. I was fortunate enough to inherit glasses like the ones pictured here, and this has been the perfect excuse to use them. We don't have the fountain yet, but we're saving up! I just love this one.
And of course looking at all these yummy photos just makes me want to dress all in green forever. And I'd start with these shoes by Everybody.

And while I'm at it I'm really interested to try Parfumerie Generale's number 23 Drama Nuuï.
It is described as a "bitter jasminade" and promises a note of absinthe which is meant to lend a dry and tart, almost bitter quality to the Jasmine. Usually I steer clear of Jasmin heavy scents as they tend to be too honey sweet for me, but this sounds just right.

Felt is considered by many to be the oldest fabric but in these lovely designs from The Felt Gallery by Vaivanat it's given vibrant new life. I love the bright colors and dramatic statement that these pieces make, especially the neck pieces. I think the brooches might also make fun bridesmaids gifts!

Today is so-called "Blue Monday", but I must say that I'm feeling quite happy and optimistic. Maybe because it's also MLK day, and I can't help shed an inspired tear or two (or twenty) when I hear the I Have a Dream sermon. And not only am I listening to the heart wrenching words of Dr. King, but I'm doing so while planning a little inaugural breakfast to celebrate the swearing in of our first black president. What a truly amazing day.

If I was able to be at the inauguration I would want to be kicking up my heels in these...

It's a Process

I'm still new to this idea of being a disciplined artist. In the past I drew when I felt like it, which was usually totally random at about 9 pm, and then I would work feverishly until I was either done or asleep in my chair. Now that I have to draw basically every day to complete assignments I am amused by how hard it is to simply get started. In typical fashion this is what happened the other day...
1. Get out of bed to draw.
2. Spend 15 minutes cleaning and rearranging work area.
3. Set-up drawing board and then promptly set it down again to get coffee.
4. Suddenly remember that there are art supplies from an old project that would help with this one... but where to find them?!
5. Spend 40 minutes looking though boxes of art supplies. Find some interesting stuff, none of it what I was looking for.
6. Realize location of supplies! (Not in boxes at all)
7. Settle down to work...
8. Get up to put on music.
9. Settle down to work...
10. Must sharpen pencils.
11. Enjoy look of pencil shavings, spend 15 minutes taking and uploading digital pictures of them.
12. Get up to dispose of pencil shavings.
13. Settle down to work...
14. Get up to use the bathroom (see step 3)
15. Finally sit down and begin to draw.

It was totally embarrassing and eye opening for me to realize that the cause of my not having enough time in the day to draw is due in large part to my amazing skill at distracting myself. I can't even blame Kelly, because he spent all of Saturday sequestered in the bedroom reading Hemingway! Ah well, live and learn, and hopefully improve.

I'm sensing a bit of a trend here in what is appealing to me at the moment. This time the rocky coastline is that of the other Portland, Portland, Maine. A very fitting setting for all the lovely maritime inspired fashions from Rogues Gallery. Kelly is a big fan of their stuff and has converted me. But what I really like about the spring line is the watery setting in which the lookbook photos were taken. Also it appears as though they will be introducing more womens clothes which is exciting.

These lovely photographs, taken in the Puglia region of Italy by photographer Roland Bello, totally confirm something I have long maintained... That the french sailor-stripe sweater is maybe the most perfect sweater you can hope to own! It's so timeless, classic, versatile and chic. I own three and am always on the hunt for more. Maybe because in some way I can imagine while wearing it that I'm on my way to a beach picnic in southern Italy, or off to sail the high seas, as opposed to my current, rather land-locked, Los Angeles life.

Top Five Fashion Moments of 2008

5. Tom Ford Gives Gucci the Finger
Well, I guess I should expect nothing less from the man who claims to not wear deodorant because he loves the way "human beings smell"(and by "human beings" we can only assume he means himself), and yet sells perfume to the masses. But in my number five favorite fashion moment of '08 Mr. Ford is at it again, this time opening his eponymous store directly across the street from Gucci (his former employers) on Rodeo Drive. Thanks Tom for continuing to be...awesome.

4. Marion Cotillard Owns the Oscars
Perhaps it's because we share the same name, but I think that Marion Cotillard, star of the 2007 movie La Vie en Rose, is just fabulous . She looked especially fabulous on the red carpet at this last years Oscars in this John Paul Gaultier mermaid gown.

3. Philip Crangi Wins CFDA Award
In a decision that was not entirely unexpected the Council of Fashion Designers of America awarded the Swarovski Award for Accesory Design to the totally adorable indie-darling Philip Crangi (who both Kelly and I have a little crush on). And men with beards prevail once again!
2. Steven Meisel Goes Black
In response to the very white world of fashion, photographer Steven Meisel shot an all black issue for Vogue Itaila and the effect was dyamic and totally gorgious. From super model Naomi Campbell to the fresh face of Jourdan Dunn the models did not disapoint.

1. I'm my own number one fashion moment!
I think I must put myself on here as my favorite fashion moment of 2008. A new chapter in my life began with my first quarter at FIDM and I'm beyond excited to see where all this is going. Here's to an amazing 2009!

We had a perfectly lovely time at the Felt Club today. The Shrine Auditorium was full to the hilt of crafty folks selling their goods. I was very pleased with the variety of merchandise, and the care and professionalism that was displayed. My absolute favorite find today is the local illustrator Catia Chien. She makes dreamy watercolors that remind me of the feeling of comfort and delight that I got as a child looking at the illustrations of Jessie Wilcox Smith and others of her era. Catia Chien's whimsical drawings are very differnt from those in A Child's Garden of Verses, but they evoke the same delight in me, which I find is not as common a feeling as an adult, and perhaps that is why I'm so excited to shaire my find. She has prints and other little gifts avaliable on her website so check it out!

Dear Miss Leggings,

I've been seeing you around town a lot lately. It appears that the rumors I heard earlier this year about you going back to your day job were false, and you are still going out every night getting sweaty on the dance floors of Los Angeles. You've left your old friends back at the dimly lit, gay friendly goth club, and have ventured out onto the red carpet with a new entourage of B-list celebrities. But I know the truth about you Vinyl Leggings. I know why you only come in black and why only Rihanna looks even passably good in you.

You are a cruel mistress, Miss Leggings. Even smart and normally stylish people are drawn to hold their breathes, clench their asses, and attempt to pull you on inch by inch. And even though the results aren't pretty, you have pulled the vinyl over their eyes. Maybe it's because they have to continue to hold their breath while wearing you that your victims feel like you make them appear slimmer, but those of us who haven't fallen prey to you know the truth. You caress every dimple of cellulite of every ass that has ever met you and you highlight every inch of what would otherwise be barely perceptible fat with a ray of black molten light that is terrifying to behold.
And as if that weren't enough, your betrayal of your new friends doesn't end there. In your endless lust for attention you have convinced these poor souls to let every inch of you be seen. Instead of hiding you under a dress like your cousin Cotton Leggings, these acolytes of the cult of Vinyl are wearing you with little t-shirts and tank tops that further reveal the havoc you have wreaked on their posteriors.

You must have slipped something into the Vodka Redbulls of stylists everywhere because they are saying all sorts of great things about you, that you are rock-star chic, versatile, and great for pairing with sweaters for a great "mix of textures". Maybe I'm just not chic enough to understand where you are coming from Vinyl Leggings... is there something more to you that I just don't understand? No! I wont allow you to pull me into your web of deceit. You must go I'm afraid. There isn't room in this town for the both of us, and there isn't room in you for anyone.

I'm so sad I didn't find this in time for Halloween! But the line by Rick Owens, drkshdw, perfectly combines two of my favorite things: high fashion and nerdy fantasy. Perhaps the always too cool for school Mr. Owens would balk at me calling his designs "nerdy", but really... fur lined druid hoodies? Yeah, that's about as nerd chic as you can get outside of Comic-Con. Either way I think it's a fantastic concept that the designer pulls off with his classic rock star touch. And apparently others agree because the line is notoriously hard to find, and sells out even with it's "not for the average budget" prices. I don't know about you, but I think that this may inspire a little sewing project of my own...

Terrific Traipsing Boots!

This time of year makes me want to go traipsing through the woods. Take the road less traveled if you will, maybe read a little Robert Frost on a convenient log. And to do this you really do need the perfect boots. Mine are a pair of brown leather, Oxford style ankle boots from J.Crew that I've had since high school. They are sturdy and worn and have the perfect forest green laces. However, if for some reason those boots were stolen, and the thief left 500 bucks in their place, I would go out and purchase the above pictured boots by Devotte. As far as I am concerned the mourning process for my much loved high school boots would be short lived if I could replace them with these babies! The perfect boots for women should ideally fall somewhere between Anne of Green Gables and Annie Oakley, and I think this pair does exactly that. *sigh* I suppose I shouldn't moon over these boots for too long, my actual boots might get jealous, and I wouldn't want to trip on that walk in the woods.

While I usually profess a love for variety, I think I could probably live on the bean&cheese Torta from Tortas de Mexico for the rest of my life. Or at least the rest of my life in L.A. In fact, when i raise this sandwich to my lips I no longer pity vegetarians! In fact I raise my glass to them! This restaurant in Pasadena is not actually a vegetarian restaurant, but the three best things on the menu most certainly are. In addition to the bean and cheese torta that I get, Kelly has developed an almost unnatural love for the chile relleno torta (pictured above in all it's glory) and when I do need a little variety I get the cheese and chile filled tamales. So if you find yourself hungry from all that shopping on Colorado Blvd. try to avoid the queue at The Cheesecake Factory and head down the street to Tortas de Mexico.

I just now got a chance to sit and peruse the merchandise, and while I haven't yet found any full lines that I like in their entirety there are quite a few nice pieces to reference for Spring. The color palate was very muted and cool for the most part, which some people made work and left others a little flat. Here are some of my favorites:

I really think he is coming into his own as a young designer, and his spot on color pallet and intellectual yet wearable clothes are wonderful to see.

Find of the Day

My find of the day is not really fashion related. It's New York band The Parlor Mob. Sort of Jack White meets Wolf Parade. (yeah, it's that good!) The band features two of the members (former members?) of Wolfmother, and they have recently signed to metal label Roadrunner Records. Check them out on the myspace.

I realize that not everyone is as crazy for Tilda Swinton as I am, and I admit her forceful fashion can miss the mark at times, but I think she is just fabulous. (delicious androgyny!) Since I am of that opinion I was excited to hear that she has a big fashion spread in W magazines September issue. And even more excited to hear that Juergen Teller (of marc jacobs advertisement fame) is the photographer. I think his raw, modern style perfectly suites her look and I can't wait to see the result in full glossy color! (hurrah for print mags! long may they prosper!)

Into the Woods

For fall this year I'm very inspired by a Northwest lumberjack sort of look. And not necessarily the obsequious buffalo plaid that all the kids wore last year. I'm thinking corduroy and fur and lots of shopping in the boys section of stores. I'm happy I never gave away my long plaid skirt that my dad got me from J.Crew when I was in high school. It may need new lining, but that thing is never going to go out of style.

Also, in celebration of the arrival of fall, I'm going to make delicious apple stuffed acorn squash for dinner tonight. I actually think I might like squash now after 25 years of retching at the mere thought of it! Shocking I know... Or perhaps it's the fact that I now control the amount of brown sugar in the recipe... :)

Fridayyyy!!! I started thinking it was Friday on Tuesday, so you can imagine my relief that the looked for day is finally here. It's been a pretty good week... Kelly is job hunting successfully, and I am slowly organizing the apartment.
We did manage to take a break from all that to see a movie, and I'm so glad we did. The documentary Man On Wire is about the fabled Philippe Petit who walked a tightrope between the two World Trade Center towers in 1974. It was an act of great human and artistic courage that film-maker James Marsh retells so gloriously on film. Go see it!! Really. You won't be sorry.

Mary Mary...

I love mary janes, I have since jr. high when I got a brown pair made from 100% recycled tire rubber. Those were the most comfortable shoes of all time, and I thought they were so cool. Now every fall when the sandals are going out and the oxfords and mary janes are coming back I always get major shoe envy, and this year is no exception. Here are a few of my favorites so far...

First of all, how often can you find a purple suede shoe? And this one is perfection since it's both comfy and cool. These are by Sofft and are available at Onlineshoes.com
I think these are the ultimate working woman pump. How appropriate that they are called "Women's Ability". By Franco Sarto, available at Endless.com

I am in love with these shoes by the new brand One of 2. Yeah... in love. Sort of contemplating a drastic financial move in order to acquire them. (sigh.) If you have more dollars than I do you can get them right now from Amazon.com ... without say, selling a kidney.
And last but not least, these t-strap mary janes by Fly London. These are fun and young but perfect for that new job with all the responsibilities. (and you might not even have to change after work for your less than responsible night life!) Find them online also at Endless.com

Friday Favorites

It's sunny, it's a quiet Friday, and I'm quite pleased with life! So here are some favorite finds and interesting things from this week.

First of all, the new restaurant Olivar on Roy right next to Joe Bar. So I haven't eaten at this restaurant yet, so my excitement may be a little premature. But the location is so beyond cute, and the chef is also cute and from France. So I have every hope that the food here will live up to the warm, inviting look of the space. If anyone makes it there before I do, let me know what you think! I'm going to try to go this weekend and post about it.

Next, on a less happy note the girly Ballard boutique Olivine is closing. (Also I'm struck by the similarity of these two names...weird.) They will be closed for good on August 17th, but until then everything, and I do mean everything is on sale. So indulge in a little schadenfreude and enjoy the great deals.

And last, but not least, I just found the perfect fall tote on Etsy! It's a screen print of the artists bookshelf. This is one of those things that I would make myself if I had the time. Lovely.

The Verdict

So yesterday I posted about my mixed feelings regarding Totokaelo.com and their beta format. Today, however, I must eat my words. I have to admit now after having joined and checked out the site, that it's pretty ingenious. A shopping and social networking site for the worldly working girl to see what the other kids are into is a great way to get people hooked on a store. I am very curious to see if all the chitchat will equal lots of clothes buying. Either way though, the site looks slick and well thought out (even if some aspects are a little hard to navigate), and totally gives you a feeling of having stumbled into a very hip online "community". There are a surprising number of women on the site from around the world, not just the Pacific Northwest, and the assumption seems to be that if you are shopping at Impulse you must be a very well traveled and classy lady. And what lady doesn't like to have that assumption made about her?

trust me, this is going to be good

So with my limited budget for shopping at the moment I can't get a bunch of new stuff for fall. Which is a shame really since the fall clothes are my favorite all year. (blazers! sweaters! colorful stockings!) But it came to me that what my wardrobe needs for fall is just one thing. Corduroy. I know what you must be thinking... and you're right, no one is really talking about corduroys glorious return. Which is in part what is fascinating for me. Also, the type of corduroy I want is exactly what you envision when you think of that fabric; large, cumbersome, wide wale, brown, tapered corduroy pants. Preferably a size too wide and a size too short. Muwahahah!!! I'm starting the hunt on Saturday. (if anyone wants to troll the thrift stores with me you are more than welcome!) And I'll post the results here on the blog.

um... ok, he's just too adorable not to share... so if you haven't got your cute-and-knows-he's-cute british bloke fix for the day you should watch Matthew Goode's screen test for T Magazine. He drinks wine. He looks into the camera like he's looking right at you. All in all a very satisfying five and a half minutes.

Take That Calvin!

So I'm totally intrigued by the idea of the decorative wall decal. I like decorating... AND I like being able to rearrange everything every few months, or when the holidays come around. So the whole notion that I could have a whole wall mural of sorts that I could potentially just remove when I'm tired of it is pretty great! It's like how I want to get one of those tattoo's that fade after a year (is that a real idea or just wishful thinking on my part?).

Anyway, there is a couple who sell really cute vinyl wall decals on Etsy.com and I'm honestly thinking I might need one for the new place. I really like the ones that go over a headboard, except we are rocking the metal frame at this point, so it would just be a cool pattern over nothing but pillows.

Viva Vintage!

For summer I am totally going crazy for vintage linens and quilts. I have been realizing that the patterns on vintage table cloths and handkerchiefs can be so fresh and crisp still, and yet have that easy, homey quality that it's almost impossible to find with modern patterns (at least the mass produced ones that are more in my price range!). I have been trolling about garage sales and ebay for all the loveliest little things and have not been disappointed. There are so many vintage tablecloths available that haven't even been used they've simply been sitting at the bottom of a drawer somewhere and occasionally someone will discover them and list them.
The hunt continues!
